Canopy Alternative: DNS-Level Filtering vs AI Image Filtering

Canopy filters explicit images with AI; NoorI blocks at the DNS level with a guardian lock. How they differ, what each costs, and which fits your needs.

Two different ideas of what a filter should do

Canopy and NoorI both block porn, but they start from different philosophies. Canopy looks inside the page, using AI to find and remove explicit images, video and text while leaving the rest of the site usable. NoorI decides whether the site loads at all, checking each domain against your rules at the network level before a connection is made. Each approach has a real advantage, and the right one depends on how you use the internet.

What Canopy offers

From Canopy's own site in October 2026:

  • AI content filtering that removes explicit images, video and text from sites such as Instagram and Reddit instead of blocking the whole site. It can also filter suggestive content such as lingerie and swimwear.
  • AI chatbot filtering and filtering on a child's phone camera
  • Sexting alerts that can flag an explicit image before it's shared
  • App and website blocking, screen time, focus tools and location alerts
  • Removal prevention to stop the app being disabled
  • An accountability ally, either a person or an AI, who can review requests to change your own settings

It supports Android, iPhone and iPad, Mac, Windows (not ARM) and Chromebooks. Canopy sells annual plans by device count, with every plan getting the same features. At the time of writing they start at $8.33/month billed annually for one device. There's a one-week trial and a 30-day guarantee, but check their site for current pricing.

How NoorI works

NoorI provisions a private Cloudflare Zero Trust Gateway location for your account and enrolls devices with the free Cloudflare One app on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac. You don't need a Cloudflare account. From there you can block categories, apps or exact domains, enforce safe search, schedule rules and pause the internet. If you install the optional NoorI certificate, you also get URL-path blocking in browsers (for example, blocking one section of a site rather than the whole domain) and a branded block page.

For adults blocking porn for themselves, Guardian mode (Pro and Family) is the centrepiece. A person you trust has to approve any change that loosens protection, such as editing or deleting rules, pausing, disconnecting or removing them as guardian. Even after approval, a delay you choose (at least four hours) runs before a 30-minute editing window opens. Adding blocks is always allowed.

Canopy vs NoorI, side by side

Canopy

  • Filtering method: AI analysis of page content, which removes explicit material while keeping the site
  • Mixed sites (Reddit, Instagram, X): can stay usable with explicit parts filtered out
  • Extras: sexting alerts, camera filtering, location alerts and chatbot filtering
  • Self-control: a human or AI ally can review changes to your settings
  • Platforms: iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows (not ARM) and Chromebook
  • Pricing: annual plans from 1 device to up to 10. Check their site for current prices.

NoorI

  • Filtering method: DNS-level allow or block decisions, with URL-path rules in browsers via the certificate
  • Mixed sites: you choose whether to block the domain, a path on it or nothing. NoorI doesn't edit content inside an allowed page.
  • Extras: schedules, Pause Internet, app blocking and an activity log of allowed and blocked domains
  • Self-control: a human guardian must approve unlocks, and there's a mandatory delay before anything opens
  • Platforms: iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac
  • Pricing: free for 1 device. Pro is $9.99/month or $95.99/year (10 devices). Family is $17.99/month or $172.99/year (20 devices, up to 5 child accounts).

The privacy tradeoff behind the technology

To remove an explicit image from a page, a filter has to be able to look at that page. That's what makes AI content filtering powerful on mixed sites. NoorI makes the opposite trade. Working at the DNS layer, it only sees which domains a device contacted and whether each request was allowed or blocked. It cannot see page content, search terms or messages, because none of that is part of a DNS lookup. If you're protecting your own devices and that privacy line matters to you, it's a meaningful difference. If you're protecting a child and want sexting alerts, you may want a tool that can see more. More on the mechanics in how DNS filtering works.

When Canopy is the better choice

  • You want to keep using mixed sites like Reddit or Instagram and have the explicit parts stripped out, rather than choosing between blocking the whole site and allowing all of it.
  • You're a parent who wants sexting alerts or camera filtering on a child's phone. NoorI doesn't do either.
  • You use a Chromebook, which Canopy supports and NoorI doesn't enroll.
  • You'd like an AI ally option instead of asking a person.

When NoorI is the better choice

  • You want a hard block that applies everywhere on the device (every browser, every app, private windows) without relying on content analysis.
  • You want a human in the loop with a built-in cooling-off period. Guardian mode's delay means even an approved unlock never happens on impulse.
  • You don't want any software reading page content on your devices.
  • You want to start free, or you need more devices per dollar. Pro covers up to 10 devices.
  • You're a technical user who likes network-level controls you can reason about: a domain or path is either allowed or blocked, and the activity log shows exactly which.

Families can still use NoorI. The Family plan supports up to 5 child accounts with their own rules (see per-child rules), but the strongest fit is adults protecting themselves.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Canopy and a DNS filter?

Canopy uses AI to analyse page content and remove explicit images, video and text while leaving the rest of the site usable. A DNS filter like NoorI decides whether a domain can load at all, before any connection is made, and never sees page content.

Can adults use Canopy or NoorI to block porn for themselves?

Yes, both support self-use. Canopy offers a human or AI ally who can review changes to your settings. NoorI's Guardian mode needs a trusted person's approval to loosen your filter, followed by a mandatory delay before anything unlocks.

Can NoorI block explicit content on Reddit without blocking all of Reddit?

Partly. With the optional NoorI certificate installed, you can block specific URL paths in browsers, such as particular sections of a site, instead of the whole domain. NoorI doesn't analyse images inside a page, though, so it can't remove individual explicit posts the way AI content filtering can.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Canopy?

NoorI has a free plan for one device, and its Pro plan costs $9.99 a month or $95.99 a year for up to 10 devices. Whether it's a like-for-like replacement depends on whether you need AI image filtering, which NoorI doesn't offer.
