How to Block Instagram on Android, Including at Night
Block Instagram on your Android phone all day or just at night. Covers Digital Wellbeing, why pausing the app doesn't stick, and an Instagram block that lasts.

The 1 a.m. Instagram problem
Ask people when Instagram does the most damage and most give the same answer: in bed, late at night. The phone is the last thing they see, Reels autoplay without end, and Explore gets more suggestive the longer they stay. Sleep goes, the next morning goes with it, and for people working on compulsive porn use, late-night Instagram is a well-known trigger.
On Android, you have more than an all-or-nothing choice. This guide covers a complete block, and a night-time block that switches on by itself and can't be switched off on a whim.
Option 1: Bedtime mode, app timers and Instagram's limit
- Settings → Digital Wellbeing & parental controls → Bedtime mode: set a schedule. This greys the screen and silences notifications, but it doesn't block apps.
- Dashboard → Instagram → App timer: set a daily cap. When it runs out, the icon goes grey and the app is paused.
- In Instagram itself, go to Your activity → Time spent to set a daily limit. Android allows custom lengths here.
- In Instagram, go to Settings → Content preferences → Sensitive content → Less to cut back on suggestive posts.
Why a paused app doesn't stay paused
Tap a paused app on Android and you're offered a quick way to change the timer, with no PIN on your own account. Bedtime mode is only greyscale. And none of these settings affects instagram.com in Chrome, which works perfectly well for Reels. At 1 a.m., willpower is at its lowest, and every one of these limits can be undone in a few seconds.
Option 2: Block Instagram with NoorI, all day or overnight
- Enroll your phone with Cloudflare One following the Android setup guide. Set its battery usage to Unrestricted. This matters most overnight, when Android is most likely to put background apps to sleep.
- In Content Policy, create a rule, open the Apps tab and choose Instagram. That covers
instagram.com,i.instagram.comandcdninstagram.com. - For a night-only block, add a schedule to the rule, for example 22:30–07:00 every day.
- Save. The schedule runs on NoorI's side, so it starts on time whether your phone is on Wi-Fi or mobile data.
App blocking and schedules are Pro features ($9.99/month, 7-day free trial).
Android-specific gotchas
- Dual Apps or cloned apps (Samsung Dual Messenger, Xiaomi Dual Apps) make no difference, because both copies hit the same blocked domains.
- Chrome's "Install app" shortcut for instagram.com is blocked too.
- Facebook Reels are often where people go next. Add Facebook from the app list to the same rule if that happens to you.
- If Instagram still loads cached posts for a minute after the block starts, force-stop it from Settings → Apps → Instagram. Nothing new will load.
Make it stick: Always-on VPN and Guardian Mode
Turn on Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN for Cloudflare One under Settings → Network & internet → VPN, so stopping the app cuts your internet instead of bringing Instagram back.
Guardian Mode (Pro) adds a second person to the loop. You invite someone you trust, such as a partner, friend, sponsor or accountability buddy, from Settings → Guardian Mode. Once they accept and you switch it on, these changes need their approval: editing or deleting a rule, pausing protection, unlocking your profile, and disconnecting NoorI. Adding a new block never needs approval, because it only makes you safer.
When you ask to unlock, your guardian gets an email. Even if they approve, nothing opens right away. There is a mandatory delay of at least 4 hours (24 hours by default), then a 30-minute window to make changes, then everything locks again by itself. A request your guardian never answers expires after 48 hours. A guardian also can't be removed for the first 2 days after they accept, so you can't invite a second email address you own and quietly delete it.
Blocking Instagram for a child?
Blocking this for a child instead? The same steps work, but a managed child profile with its own rules is a better fit than sharing your account. See setting different rules for different children.
Frequently asked questions
Can I block Instagram only at night on Android?
Yes. Add a schedule to a NoorI rule that blocks Instagram, for example 22:30 to 07:00. The schedule runs on NoorI's servers, so it starts and ends on time with nothing to remember.
Does Digital Wellbeing block Instagram in Chrome?
No. App timers apply to the Instagram app only. instagram.com in a browser isn't affected.
Can I keep Instagram DMs?
Not while Instagram is blocked, because DMs use the same domains. A scheduled window lets you check messages briefly at a set time each day.
