The "deleted the app, now I use the website" problem
The most common pattern with Instagram is displacement: you delete the phone app, feel great for three days, then discover that instagram.com in a laptop browser shows Reels and Explore just fine. The browser version is slower, which makes it feel harmless, right up until it is an hour later. If you have already dealt with your phone, the computer is the remaining leak.
Free ways to block Instagram on a computer
- Windows hosts file: add
0.0.0.0 instagram.comand0.0.0.0 www.instagram.com(Notepad as admin, thenipconfig /flushdns). - Mac: restrict
instagram.comin Screen Time → Content & Privacy, or set a daily website limit under App Limits. - Instagram itself: the Your activity → Time spent reminders are advisory only.
Images load from cdninstagram.com with regional subdomains that a hosts file cannot wildcard, and both the hosts file and Screen Time are reversible by an admin who knows the passcode, which is usually you.
Block Instagram with NoorI
- Enroll the computer with the free Cloudflare One app: Windows or Mac.
- In Content Policy, create a rule and add the Instagram app, which covers
instagram.com,cdninstagram.comand every subdomain. - Want the whole Meta feed gone? Add Facebook and Threads to the same rule. The Block Social Media template does this in one step.
- Test in a private window and a second browser.
Blocking apps requires Pro ($9.99/month, 7-day free trial). Enroll your phone in the same account and the block follows you there too; the Instagram-on-phone guides in this section cover the mobile side.
What blocking Instagram does and does not affect
- Blocking Instagram does not block Facebook or WhatsApp; they use separate domains. Add them separately if you want them gone.
- Blocking Facebook as well will break "Log in with Facebook" buttons on other sites, because they load from Facebook domains.
- Instagram embeds on news sites and blogs will show as empty boxes.
- DNS cannot block Reels while keeping direct messages. If you need DMs for work, a schedule is the realistic compromise.
Relapse-proofing it
The moment you most want to unblock Instagram is exactly the moment you should not be able to. Turn on Guardian Mode: deleting the rule, pausing protection or disconnecting sends a request to your accountability partner, and an approved request still waits out your chosen delay (minimum 4 hours, 24 by default) before a 30-minute window opens. Use a standard account on the computer so the Cloudflare One app cannot be uninstalled on a whim, and read bypass prevention for the VPN gap.

Frequently asked questions
Does blocking Instagram also block Facebook?
No. They use separate domains. In NoorI, add the Facebook and Threads apps to the same rule if you want all of Meta's feeds blocked.
Can I block Instagram Reels but keep messages on desktop?
Not with DNS filtering. Reels and messages are served from the same Instagram domains, so a DNS rule blocks all of it. A schedule is the practical compromise.
Will an Instagram block on my laptop follow me to my phone?
Yes, if the phone is enrolled in the same NoorI account. Rules apply to every enrolled device on any network.
