How to Block Reddit on Android: App, Chrome and Third-Party Clients

Block Reddit on an Android phone across the app, Chrome, Samsung Internet and sideloaded clients. Why Digital Wellbeing timers fail, and what to use instead.

The Android-specific problem: too many doors

On Android, Reddit can come in through far more routes than on an iPhone. There's the official app, Chrome, Samsung Internet, Firefox, and a long list of third-party Reddit clients that are often installed from APK files rather than the Play Store. Block one and you'll drift to another, usually without really noticing.

People block Reddit on Android for the usual reasons: hours lost to r/popular, comment threads that ruin a night's sleep, or NSFW subreddits that undo weeks of porn-free progress. Whatever the reason, the fix has to cover every door at once. Blocking one app isn't enough.

Option 1: Digital Wellbeing app timer

Most Android phones have Digital Wellbeing built in. On Pixel and stock Android:

  1. Open Settings → Digital Wellbeing & parental controls → Dashboard.
  2. Tap Reddit, then App timer.
  3. Set the shortest time it allows and tap OK.

On Samsung, the path is Settings → Digital Wellbeing and parental controls → App timers. You can also use Focus mode to pause Reddit and other distracting apps on a schedule.

Why app timers don't hold

  • There is no lock on your own account. An app timer can be removed from the Dashboard in two taps, with no PIN or passcode. Focus mode offers a "Take a break" button that does what you'd expect.
  • Timers apply to one app. Limiting the official Reddit app does nothing for reddit.com in Chrome or for a third-party client.
  • Chrome has no built-in site blocklist for adults. Google's site restrictions are tied to Family Link-supervised child accounts, so on your own account there is nothing to switch on.

Option 2: Block Reddit at the network level with NoorI

NoorI blocks Reddit's domains through a private Cloudflare Gateway, so it doesn't matter which app or browser asks. The official app, Chrome, Samsung Internet, Firefox and any third-party client get the same answer: blocked.

  1. Enroll your phone with the free Cloudflare One app using the Android setup guide. Don't skip the step that sets battery usage to Unrestricted. Otherwise Android can quietly put the connection to sleep.
  2. In Content Policy, create a rule, open the Apps tab and pick Reddit. That covers reddit.com, redd.it, redditmedia.com, reddituploads.com and redditstatic.com.
  3. Save the rule, force-stop the Reddit app from Settings → Apps → Reddit, and reopen it to check.

Blocking a named app is a Pro feature ($9.99/month, 7-day free trial). The Free plan is limited to the Basic adult-and-security preset, which doesn't cover Reddit because Reddit isn't classified as an adult site.

Harden it: Always-on VPN and Guardian Mode

On Android, the most likely bypass is simply turning the filter off, so close that route:

  1. Go to Settings → Network & internet → VPN (on Samsung: Connections → More connection settings → VPN).
  2. Tap the gear next to Cloudflare One.
  3. Turn on Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN.

Now if Cloudflare One is stopped or uninstalled, the phone loses internet instead of quietly going unfiltered. NoorI also locks the connect switch inside the Cloudflare One app. Changing the phone's Private DNS setting doesn't get around the block either, because NoorI blocks DNS-override attempts while the tunnel is active (see VPN and bypass prevention).

Guardian Mode (Pro) adds a second person to the loop. You invite someone you trust, such as a partner, friend, sponsor or accountability buddy, from Settings → Guardian Mode. Once they accept and you switch it on, these changes need their approval: editing or deleting a rule, pausing protection, unlocking your profile, and disconnecting NoorI. Adding a new block never needs approval, because it only makes you safer.

When you ask to unlock, your guardian gets an email. Even if they approve, nothing opens right away. There is a mandatory delay of at least 4 hours (24 hours by default), then a 30-minute window to make changes, then everything locks again by itself. A request your guardian never answers expires after 48 hours. A guardian also can't be removed for the first 2 days after they accept, so you can't invite a second email address you own and quietly delete it.

Don't want to quit Reddit completely?

Plenty of people want Reddit for one hobby subreddit and none of the rest. Since DNS can't tell one subreddit from another, the realistic compromise is time. Put a schedule on the Reddit rule so it's blocked all day except, say, 20:00–20:30. With Guardian Mode on, moving that window needs approval too, so it can't creep from half an hour to all evening.

Blocking Reddit for a child?

Blocking this for a child instead? The same steps work, but a managed child profile with its own rules is a better fit than sharing your account. See setting different rules for different children.

Frequently asked questions

Does this block Reddit apps installed from APK files?

Yes. However a client was installed, it has to fetch posts from Reddit's servers, and those domains are what NoorI blocks.

Can I just set Private DNS on Android to a filtering resolver?

You can, but anyone can change Private DNS back in Settings in a few seconds, and it has no schedule or approval step. NoorI also blocks attempts to override DNS while Cloudflare One is connected.

Will blocking Reddit break Google search?

No. Google keeps working normally. Only Reddit results open a block page when you tap them.

Does it drain the battery?

Cloudflare One is a lightweight background connection. Most people see little or no difference, although setting battery usage to Unrestricted is necessary for it to stay connected.
