How to Block Betting Apps on Your Phone (iPhone and Android)

Block betting and casino apps on iPhone and Android: app store restrictions, Always-on VPN lockdown, and DNS blocking that stops installed apps working.

Your phone is the casino

Most betting now happens on a phone: in-play markets during a match, a casino app at 2 a.m., push notifications with "boosted odds". Deleting the apps helps for a day, but reinstalling takes seconds and your login is saved. To actually stop, you need two things: make the apps hard to reinstall, and make them useless even if they are installed.

iPhone: restrict installs with Screen Time

  1. Delete every betting and casino app.
  2. Go to Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions and switch it on.
  3. Under iTunes & App Store Purchases, set Installing Apps to Don't Allow, or under App Store, Media, Web & Games set the app age rating below the rating gambling apps carry.
  4. Choose Lock Screen Time Settings and let someone else set the passcode.

If you set the passcode yourself, this is a speed bump. Also note: blocking installs does not stop the mobile website, and the app rating approach blocks other mature-rated apps too.

Android: Family Link and Play Store controls

Android has no adult self-restriction for gambling apps built in. The options are Play Store parental controls (content rating limits, PIN-protected) or supervising your own account through Google Family Link from a trusted person's account. Sideloaded APKs, which many offshore casinos distribute directly, ignore Play Store controls entirely. That is why network-level blocking matters more on Android.

Make betting apps stop working with NoorI

An installed betting app still has to look up its servers. NoorI blocks those lookups using Cloudflare's Gambling category, so the app cannot load odds, log in or take deposits.

  1. Install the free Cloudflare One app and enroll the phone: iPhone or Android.
  2. In Content Policy, apply the Balanced preset or add the Gambling category to a rule (Pro).
  3. Add the domains of your specific bookmakers as Web addresses so they are covered even if categorisation lags.
  4. Test on mobile data with WiFi off.

On Android, also set the Cloudflare One app as Always-on VPN with Block connections without VPN in Settings → Network → VPN, so removing it cuts the internet rather than unlocking it. On iPhone, set Deleting Apps to Don't Allow in Screen Time so the Cloudflare One app stays put.

Put a person between you and the bet

With Guardian Mode on Pro ($9.99/month, 7-day free trial), turning off the gambling block requires your guardian to approve an emailed request, and then a delay you set (minimum 4 hours) before a 30-minute window. Requests your guardian ignores expire after 48 hours. Combine it with a self-exclusion scheme and a bank gambling block, covered in blocking gambling sites.

What can still get through

  • A separate VPN app on the phone routes around DNS filtering: see VPN bypass prevention.
  • Brand-new betting domains may take time to be categorised. Add them yourself.
  • A second, unenrolled phone or tablet is not covered.

Frequently asked questions

Can I block gambling apps on iPhone without Screen Time?

Yes. With NoorI's Gambling category active, betting apps cannot reach their servers, so they fail to load even if installed. Screen Time is still useful for stopping reinstalls.

Do Play Store controls block sideloaded casino APKs?

No. Apps installed outside the Play Store skip its controls. Network-level blocking still applies because the app has to look up its servers.

What happens if I delete the Cloudflare One app on Android?

If you set it as Always-on VPN with Block connections without VPN, the phone loses internet access until it is reconnected, which removes the easy escape.
